Why Shade Matching Is More Than a Number
A natural-looking restoration is never defined by a shade tab alone. Two teeth with the same shade label can still look different depending on the details around them.
Standard shade guides give a useful starting reference, but a tooth's true appearance comes from several layered qualities: value (how light or dark it appears), translucency (how light passes through it), and surface texture and characterization (the subtle variations that make a tooth look alive rather than flat).
The teeth surrounding a restoration, and even the lighting in the room where a photo or evaluation happens, can change how a shade appears. That is why shade selection is done in person, against your own teeth, rather than from a photo alone.
These small observations are part of what separates a restoration that blends in from one that stands out for the wrong reasons. Individual results vary, and the achievable match depends on the condition of the surrounding teeth.
